Less than one week from the first Duke-Carolina matchup, Heels fans are getting an incredible stomach punch this morning, if this ESPN report does indeed turn out to be true:
In a jarring February development, North Carolina point guard Larry Drew II has left the Tar Heels team and will transfer, according to a source close to the situation.
The source did not cite a reason for Drew’s decision to transfer but did say the junior left campus Thursday, roughly 48 hours after recording nine assists in 19 minutes in North Carolina’s 106-74 victory over Boston College. The source also said Carolina’s coaches were aware of Drew’s decision.
If this does turn out to be true, it’s both an absolute shocker and a serious threat to halt UNC’s upward-trending play as of late. Of course, Drew recently lost his starting job for the Heels but had been playing fantastic off the bench, notching 9 assists and just 1 turnover in his last game against the Eagles.
If the news does turn out to be true, we’ll try to mentally regroup and have a little analysis on what it means for UNC the rest of the way. But here’s a sneak preview: it’s not good.
Stay tuned.
