Tar Heel fans came hoping for another show from Gio Bernard, but they got an arial display from Bryn Renner and the passing attack instead. Renner threw for 315 yards and 3 TDs overall, including two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, and the Heels made a once-quasi-hot Virginia team look like the bottom-dwellers that most experts predicted them to be this year.
Renner's favorite target was WR Quinshad Davis, who ran circles around the Cavaliers' defense and managed 178 yards total on 16 catches. Erik Highsmith added two touchdown catches, Bernard had 104 all-purpose yards, and the defense actually managed to step up in crucial spots, managing a key goal-line stand in the 4th quarter that preserved Carolina's lead and led to a long UNC drive that broke UVA's back.
